1908

The Rolex 1908 arrived in 2023 as something unusually revealing from a company best known for Oyster cases, rotating bezels and watches built to accompany explorers, pilots and divers. It succeeded the long-running Cellini family while inaugurating Rolex’s new Perpetual collection, giving the brand’s dress watches a clearer identity and a more confident place beside its professional models. Its name reaches back much further: 1908 was the year Hans Wilsdorf devised the Rolex name and registered it in Switzerland. Rather than commemorating a particular watch, the name links the collection to the moment Rolex itself began taking shape. Although unmistakably modern, the 1908 draws much of its personality from the early decades of the wristwatch. Its dial reinterprets the appearance of an Oyster Perpetual from 1931, using Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12, slim faceted markers and a small-seconds display at 6 o’clock. A Breguet-style hour hand shares the dial with a sharply shaped, two-edged sword minute hand, an unlikely pairing that gives the watch both formality and character. The result is not a vintage reissue or a careful replica. It is closer to an imagined continuation of the restrained, elegant Rolex watches that existed before the brand’s sports models came to dominate its public identity. The case carries the same balance of old and new. At 39 millimeters, it is larger and more contemporary than many traditional dress watches, yet sufficiently slim and carefully proportioned to sit discreetly beneath a cuff. Its bezel is divided into a finely fluted lower section and a smooth domed upper section, borrowing a familiar Rolex design code without simply transplanting the full fluted bezel of a Datejust or Day-Date. Chamfered lugs, a domed sapphire crystal and an uncluttered polished case keep the silhouette graceful, while 50 meters of water resistance adds a useful measure of everyday practicality. Yellow gold, white gold and platinum give the collection variety without weakening its deliberate precious-metal identity. The most important part of the 1908 may be the one Rolex allows its owner to see. Caliber 7140 is displayed through a sapphire case back, a notable departure from the solid backs traditionally associated with most Rolex watches. Developed specifically for the 1908, the automatic movement combines a Chronergy escapement, Syloxi silicon hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers with an approximately 66-hour power reserve. Its bridges are decorated with Rolex Côtes de Genève, distinguished by polished grooves between the bands, while an open worked gold rotor supplies a suitably refined focal point. The movement therefore does not abandon Rolex’s familiar priorities of precision, reliability and resistance to everyday disturbance; it simply presents them with a level of visual ceremony that the company once preferred to keep hidden. The original 2023 collection established the formula with yellow- and white-gold cases, intense white or black dials and alligator straps secured by a double-folding Dualclasp. Rolex broadened the family in 2024 with the platinum 1908, pairing the metal with an ice-blue dial and a traditional guilloché rice-grain pattern. That model transformed the restrained design into a showcase for decorative dial-making without overwhelming its underlying simplicity. In 2025, the yellow-gold models gained the exclusive Settimo bracelet, composed of rows of seven small polished elements and closed by a concealed Crownclasp. The bracelet gives the 1908 a more jewelry-like presence and recalls the supple gold bracelets found on elegant mid-century watches, creating a distinctly different personality from the leather-strapped versions. Collectors are drawn to the 1908 partly because it occupies unfamiliar Rolex territory. A Submariner, GMT-Master II or Daytona communicates its purpose immediately, while the 1908 asks for closer inspection. Its most interesting details are subtle: the contrasting hands, the small-seconds typography, the partially fluted bezel, the green lining of the alligator strap and the movement finishing visible through the back. The collection is also young enough that its evolution can still be followed from the beginning, with the original gold models, the more artisanal platinum edition and the bracelet-equipped versions forming clearly identifiable chapters. Rather than depending on a single famous reference, the line develops its appeal through a coherent design language expressed with different degrees of restraint and opulence. The 1908 is not intended to be the indestructible, wear-anywhere Rolex that many buyers expect. Its polished precious-metal surfaces can readily record the evidence of use, its leather straps naturally discourage prolonged exposure to water, and its 50-metre rating is modest beside the brand’s Oyster sports watches. The 39-millimetre diameter may also feel generous to purists accustomed to compact vintage dress watches. Yet those limitations are inseparable from its purpose. The 1908 sacrifices the visual bulk, crown guards, luminous displays and overt functionality of a professional Rolex in favor of proportion, texture and simplicity. Even the Settimo bracelet, beautiful though it is, shifts the watch from quiet dress piece toward expressive gold jewelry, making the leather and bracelet versions meaningfully different rather than merely interchangeable. Within modern horology, the 1908 matters because it shows what Rolex can accomplish when it turns its immense technical resources toward traditional watchmaking elegance. It does not attempt to imitate the hand-finished complexity of a small haute-horologer manufacture, nor does it disguise itself as a sports watch simply because that category is commercially dominant. Instead, it applies Rolex’s industrial precision, movement technology and exacting consistency to a classical small-seconds watch. For a collection already filled with capable Oyster models, the 1908 offers an appealing counterpoint: quieter, more formal and more interested in the pleasure of proportion than the promise of adventure. It is a modern dress Rolex that acknowledges the brand’s earliest ambitions while suggesting that its future need not be defined entirely by the watches for which it is already famous.
